You may have noticed that my activity on this blog has been reduced compared to 2020 and 2021. But this doesn’t mean that I’ve been unproductive! On the contrary, I have participated in other projects and I have reaped the fruits of my first year with the new research group!
Last February I contribuited to the translation from Italian to Spanish of the second edition of the children’s book Colorea la ciencia: Draw Science – Wissenschaft färben by my dear friend Martina Bodner (author of the scicomm blog SciComm for everyone).
In May I attended the international meeting of the EPIZONE European Research Group, the international network of research groups working on epizootic diseases*, where I presented my first data!

In September I was interviewed for the Itaca podcast, where I shared my experience as a “Sardinian living abroad” and I talked about my passion for writing. I am grateful to the host Federico Esu, who is building a community of people brought together not only by our common Sardinian origin, but mostly by a set of shared values and the desire to give back to the society we come from. The stories collected by Federico are extremely interesting and inspiring, and I encourage you to listen to all episodes… starting from mine, of course!
I have also renewed my collaboration with the Spanish scicomm blog Dciencia publishing a post last October. You can find all my posts here: Carla Usai | Dciencia
The first paper of my work with the IRTA-CReSA Coronavirus group was published in November: Agreement and differential use of laboratory methods for the detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in experimentally infected animals (we are working on more papers, stay tuned!)
And last but not least, I was invited by Ahsen Ustaoglu to take part in her podcast Coffee Break Science. I met Ahsen in 2019 when I joined the WISE@QMUL committee, and we worked together on the organisation of the WISE@QMUL International Women’s Day 2021 Conference. My interview was published on Christmas Eve, and it is available on Spotify or wherever you listen to your favourite podcasts.
I hope you also had a productive 2022, and I wish you a happy 2023!
